I recently received a copy of "The Old Mill" in the mail. This is a newsletter for the local community in Brooktondale, NY where the Homestead is located. As I was reading it, I chuckled a little at the delightful country activities on the horizon. So I thought I would share some with those of you that may be thinking of a trip to upstate New York:
- Gad!Zukes! Zucchini Festival at the Caroline Farmers Market on August 17th from 10 am to 2 pm. Yes zucchini - those long green veggies from the garden. There will be zucchini food and zucchini cookbooks as well as a zucchini contest for the largest, smallest and most interesting zucchini. You can also arrive with your own zucchini dish masterpiece for inclusion in the zucchini food contest. I guess last year there was zucchini lasagna, brownies and everything in between.
- Caroline Farmers Market. This wonderful example of a small town farmers market is held every Saturday from May until late October. Featured weekly are local veggies, cheese, meat, bread and other baked goods, pesto, herbs, ham, honey, maple syrup and annual and perennial bedding and hanging plants. There is a snack bar along with crafts such as candles, pottery, fabric art jewelry and such.
- Apple Fest October 19th. The 50th Annual Brooktondale Apple Festival will be held the third weekend in October. This will include anything apple such as pies, cakes, cider, etc. Additionally there will be over 500 pies sold in pie bees and a quilt raffle, cake wheel, silent auction etc, etc, etc...
- Throughout all the small towns around us, you can find fish fries, ice cream socials, pancake breakfasts, flea markets, garage sales, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, biking and much more.
